Increasing wealth at the expense of the city's soul. #Tokyolife

In the end it comes down to money. Many of the old homes are owned by old, lower-middle income earners. When a person dies, their descendants are taxed on their inheritance. In other words. If the owner of one of those quaint Tokyo homes dies, their kids will be taxed for their property on the extremely over-inflated land values of central Tokyo. The kind of money that no regular person earning even a moderate salary in Tokyo could ever afford.

Those families either have to give up their inheritance for a pittance, which is then snatched up by the greedy real-estate developers, bulldozed and turned into apartments for the rich, or to pay for the property, People are forced to take new loans on their property despite it being theirs, burying them in debt with no real hope for the future as salaries continue to spiral downward and Tokyo land values continue to shoot upward.

The government knows this. They could easily fix the law to support the people but as anyone following the Fukushima, Tsukiji Fish Market, Tokyo Olympic scandals can clearly see, Neither the Tokyo Metro, nor the Central Government gives two shits about the regular, hard-working members of society. They only care about enriching themselves and the giant companies owned by their friends and families, at the expense of the people they should be serving.

So while you're strolling the backstreets of Tokyo, lost in your fantasies, know that what you're seeing is likely not going to be there for long, and all the small, local, vibrant, individual parts of Tokyo that made the city what it was, are going extinct.

Shibuya #RealJapan

Before i lived here, I wasn't much of a fan of the Fuji/Sushi/Geisha/shrine images of Japan that Japanophiles, tend to spam the internet with. Nowhere on Earth is anything like the postcard, but the inability of visitors here to see past their sakura tinted glasses bugged me, after 8 years in Japan, it positively vexes me.

It may be one of the best places to live. I know I don't want to live anywhere else. But all the 'japanese culture' that the tourists shnarf like cocaine no more real than the twisted right-wing nationalism that Shinzo Abe is trying to force down everyone's throats. It's all a facade. Thick white makeup covering a pockmarked and blemished face.

I do my damndest to show the reality of this place, through well composed and quality Photo/videography. Sadly, if there is one universal truth about the vast herd of snapchatting baboons infesting the globe, it's that the last things anyone wants to see, are reality and quality.

CP+ rant, Miso Ramen, plum blossoms and more... #7Days7Minutes (2016-02-22)

It's been a while since I've vented frustrations on this vlog, but what's a vlog, if not a place to vent. I make up for it with scenic shots of places no other J-vlogger will show, and some bonus CP+ fanservice to make up for it though.

Shibuya Nightwalk

I have been doing some part-time layout design in Omotesando at the same place The Cat works, and, because I'm poor, on the trip home, I've been walking to Shibuya to save an extra ¥120 on the train trip. I've also been leaving my camera at home a lot more recently because, at the Tokyo Autosalon, my main 12-35 f2.8 X lens' autofocus system died a spectacular death (I cant afford to get it fixed either... hell. I can't even afford to take the train to Akihabara to get a quote form the Panny repair centre, let alone pay their price.) and if the camera dies too, as my bad-luck, QC-skipped one has a history of doing, I'll be proper screwed financially.

But because it was snowing on Friday, i popped on the 20mm f1.7 pancake and put it in my bag, just in case. The snow was all gone by the time I was done for the day, but I did have the chance to actually take pictures for fun, which I haven't really done in a very long time.

All shots are untouched apart from the odd crop/straighten and the removal of the Aston's Number-plate. Most were shot with the camera's built in vivid colour mode in aperture priority (cars were Auto)

It felt really good. so good that I'm contemplating abusing the credit card to get a second body so that I have a backup, and a daily shooter again. I probably wont unless it actually dies again... at which point I will sell all my Panny kit and go sony because I'm really sick and tired of Panasonic's overly polite, but effectively useless after-sales service, and their woeful lack of pro support.

Anyway... Pictures:

Shibuya's Iconic Hachiko statue Desecrated!!!

In Shibuya yesterday I passed the Hachiko statue and it had been desecrated in the most garish, disgusting way. Taking this iconic statue and defacing it with plastic and fluff, reducing it to the level of Tokyo's endless supply of plastic faced, fluff-for-brains fashionistas.

That vacant stare of the fashion model in the poster, are lenses into the vast void that resides behind every fashionista's makeup. Soulless meat mannequins and their endless consumption of useless garbage, reducing one of the few real, true and meaningful, timeless things in Shibuya to yet another split second fong-kong, plastic throw-away novelty.

I Hate Cyclists

They're the evangelicals of the commuting world. They praise their lifestyle and transport as the greatest way to live and travel on the face of the earth yet they break every single rule and common courtesy of the road. They expect and often demand that all other road/sidewalk user give way to them, but they still whine, moan and complain that they are the ones being persecuted by society.

The woman in this photo is a prime example. She rode straight down a pedestrian walkway focussed completely on her phone. I wasn't in her path but 2 people had to dodge just before I snapped this shot. Yet she continued oblivious to the world.

About 2 years ago A cyclist ran herself into the back of my car in exactly the same manner. It was a small intersection in Shibukawa. I saw the cyclist approaching on the road perpendicular to me but thought nothing of it as her road had a stop sign and I had right of way. I kept going. I heard the sound, felt the impact and saw her going down in my side mirror. In truth, because I knew the rider I was worried that she may be injured but she was OK. Later on when filing the police report (as one needs to do) the cop didn't believe me till they saw the impact damage. Then he proceeded to grill the rider for being a moron.

Since moving to the city and becoming a pedestrian, cyclists have become even more dangerous as they use their speed to basically bully people on foot. Pick any reasonably busy intersection with traffic lights and I guarantee you you will see a cyclist skip red lights and cut across pedestrian streams as they cross the road. Arrogantly ringing their bells, forcing people to move out of their way even though they are in the wrong.

More times than I can remember, Ive been cut off by these scum and every time I have wished that I was walking a little faster or was just a little closer because while I will get hurt in the impact, they'd get hurt more and the legal hammer would come down on them too. (Thankfully?) The vast majority of cyclists on the roads do crap like this so It's only a matter of time before I get one.

They will still complain that there is nowhere for them to ride (because when there are cycling lanes, they ride on the pavements anyway). They whine about how cars don't respect them (while they don't respect anything on the roads and pavements they use) They talk about how everyone endangers them (while they ignore how they endanger themselves and everyone else on the road.)

If only we could persecute the bastards. They are dangerous, self righteous vermin. And the next time one of them tries to cut across me when I have the right of way, I'm going to give them the time to contemplate their the meaning of traffic lights as they pick their teeth up off the asphalt.

The Eyes of The Law - Akihabara, Tokyo.

bakadaruku.blogspot.com

The other day I was in Akihabara again for the first time in a few weeks and I had noticed these signs up on the lamp posts. I only saw the Japanese and Chinese ones but it's likely that they exist in Korean and English too. Basically they say that Hawking is a crime, and selling pirate branded goods/dvds is a no no. So you better not do it... ' cos the EYES are watching you!

bakadaruku.blogspot.com

Firstly. Anyone who buys branded goods just because they want to show off the brand is a moron of biblical proportions, a waste of resources and quite frankly a disgrace to our species. I cannot even fathom the level of stupidity required for someone to consciously buy a fake branded product so they can pretend they are like the morons who buy and show off actual brands.

bakadaruku.blogspot.com

As for the DVDs... It's 2014 in Tokyo!! Who the hell still watches DVDs??

I'm 30 years old.

I'm officially old. My 20s have come to an end and I've summited and am now beginning to descend. My birthday present? An endoscopy (which I paid for) and the subsequent feeling like crap that goes along with having a camera shoved down one's throat.

Good news: I definitely don't have stomach cancer, ulcers or anything visibly wrong.
Bad news: We have no Idea why my stomach is constantly giving me grief.

Maybe the very first diagnosis was the correct one... Stress.

In other news no birthday Party this year. There is nowhere to have a braai at our new place in Kawasaki. And even if there were, it's raining all day and I'm very very VERY broke this month. I AM getting a lot of exposure this month. But you can't eat exposure, nor can you have a birthday party with it.

Seriously, those of you who know me... can you imagine ME not having an epic birthday party??!! In truth I would be unable to consume the amounts I'm used to consuming and so I wonder how crazed it would be but I'm old so an old man's party would still be better than no party.

It's not all bad. My mom is in Japan. It's good to have the woman who birthed me and raised me around for my 30th birthday. We were gonna see a movie but all the stuff on circuit right now is crap so we got a burger and went home. She's making some home-cooked mom food right now though. She also brought a half-jack of Klipdrift from home so I can get a taste of the good times even if I'm not slugging a mighty mix (750ml klippies into 1.25l of coke).

but yeah. 30, on the 30th of April 2014. done and done. Now go watch my YouTube videos and share them with everyone you know so I can make some money to have a proper party sometime before the year is up.

The reason i've not updated in a while...

Is because I'm playing with a pre-production Panasonic Lumix GH4

The review will be up on AkihabaraNews.com soon enough.

Last day with it today. Gotta get some last minute footage and shots before returning it to Panny.

I just wish I had the money to buy one of these. Hell I wish I had enough money to pay my my fair share of the bills instead of relying on the cat while I chase my dreams and sink deeper into debt.

Going Home

東京で人は多いけど人間は少ない。
In Tokyo there are many people but very few human beings.
~me
That's what I said over dinner the other night in Shibukawa when explaining to my mates why I was so unbelievably overjoyed to be there. In the 2 days back home I had more meaningful conversations about life, history, politics and cars with more different people than in the previous month the zombie apocalypse that is the capital.

One truly doesn't appreciate how awesome a place is till you leave it. The people, honesty, generosity, delicious food, clean air, hot springs , driving, scapes and fact that it is all true and real. I love that little town on the confluence of the Tone and Agatsuma Rivers. It has truly become my home. More than anywhere else, It is there that I want to return.

Shots #106 DOOK!

I took this in 2013 in a more working class suburb of Yokohama. In Japan, many of these old school, single owner bottle stores have these bizarre yet awesome and well detailed mascots. They also often have great selections of Japanese booze.

This shop doesn't exist anymore. I spoke to the owner who was in the process of packing up and selling off the last of his wares, he told me that the shopping centre that opened at the station a few hundred metres away broke him. The generic chain stores within buy in massive bulk and can undercut the local sellers. While they generally don't stock some of the finer and more unique varieties of alcohol from smaller sake and shochu producers in favour of the cheap mass-market pigswill from bloated businesses like Kirin and Suntory, they do let the customer get drunk for cheaper. As a result the friendly old man at the corner liquor store was forced to close down and that cute duck perched atop it's barrel has probably been melted down or is rusting in a scrap heap.

This is a double blow because without outlets to sell their sake, smaller producers get hit too, and while they have some government assistance, that very government is trying to put them out of business with the TPP.

Tokyo masses are to busy slaving away in their offices and watching the happy lies on NHK, too insulated by the city's wealth to the realities outside,  all the Otaku fap away to their pre-pubescent idols, all the overseas dreamers look at pictures of geisha, sakura, and mt. Fuji and think everything is idyllic and wonderful. But the true heart of Japan is being hollowed by greed to turn a quick profit.

This is the side of Japan that nobody sees. This story is being replayed at every single family owned retail business in every single small town and suburb in the country. Sadly, these bizarre yet awesome mascots,  like so many amazing and unique things in Japan, will likely disappear as a result.

Could it be… Culture Shock?

I've been so busy hating Tokyo that I forgot all that culture shock jibberjabber from JET orientation half a decade ago…

meat-mannequins-12
When passing on the info to a friend who is experiencing classic symptoms I realized that I too was experiencing them... Which means that I might actually like Tokyo after all in a few months when I adapt to all it's fake plasticity.

The thing is, I'm not so sure I like that…

meat-mannequins-8

I don't want to think of vacuous husks of soulless, brand huffing meat mannequins as being members of the same species as me. I think I actually like hating them, despite the stress it brings. Though in truth I have much in common with them than I choose to admit. It's just much easier to treat them like the insensitive, selfish scum that they pretend to be…

because they are different to me…

I sound ‘murican.

Though now that I know it's just culture shock I almost want to see if there are some humans under caked make up, vacant expressions and badly fitting suits...

meat-mannequins-9 meat-mannequins-4

almost

I do think that in a month or 2 when I hit my stride here I will have to eat many a word... I mean they truly cannot be as out of touch with reality as the media makes them think they are... right? Well maybe that is possible especially since so many of them were happy about the Tokyo Olympics.

meat-mannequins-6

But seriously, even if they are ignoring to the realities facing the country, To take them at face value is a bit harsh….

Ok, the louts who don’t give their seats to old people on the trains will always be scum…

But I think maybe most of them are only soulless brand huffing meat mannequins because that’s what the city expects them to be and it’s so much easier to fit in than to be true. Does that mean that when I adjust to my new life here I will look vacantly through everyone going about my own things in my own way, ignorant or at least resigned to the fact that regardless of how much I rage I truly will not make any difference.

meat-mannequins-7  meat-mannequins-3

JohnnyTokyo would probably tell me to just ignore it and see the good side (because there really is one). That’s probably why he thrives here. I wonder if I will have the willpower to tolerate the levels of BS that one needs to to make this city home… Or whether I should just start applying for jobs in Osaka. Hell Maybe I just need to move back to Gunma, re-shaken the Silvia and take a good drive to cleanse the grime that has been deposited on my mind.

meat-mannequins-5 meat-mannequins-11

That would be nice but not realistic.

There is always Shibuya. No matter how much I hate Tokyo I always love Shibuya. Despite having the highest concentration slaves to society, It also has a rich underbelly that cramps and spasms to continually keep the system slightly uneasy. It brings out the truth in people and shows them glimpses of freedom from their societal bondage . Yes. If I am to make something of a life for myself in this cesspool, Shibuya is the place to start.

meat-mannequins-1

I hate thinking rationally sometimes. I always have to figure out the truth behind my feelings Being able to blindly and irrationally hate people because you dislike them looks like a nice simple life.

Damn this got deep.

But I’m feeling better already!

Lies Cream 'festival', Ikebukuro

Check out this short write up on Time Out Tokyo:

 http://www.timeout.jp/en/tokyo/event/9462/Ice-Cream-Collection

It is a beautiful example of how one can create spectacular imagery with the English language. I don't want to fault the writer because their beautiful way with words convinced the cat and I to go to Ikebukuro and experience "minefield for brain freeze".

All one can ever really want as a writer is to have your words spur readers to action... The trouble is there is a line where creative embellishment goes so far that it illustrates an image so disconnected with reality, that it becomes a downright lie.

_1380899

The "enormous ice cream festival" barely covered 5 square meters. It was a bunch of freezers shoved in a corner of what is effectively the entrance thoroughfare to the Ikebukuro Tokyu Hands store. Which had a whole selection of other promotions that got in the way of the Ice Cream and effectively destroyed the ambiance so much that I didn't even want to see what all the flavours were nor read all the tiny info written on tiny cards.

The companies from "across Japan" were mostly clustered on Honshu and the "local ingredients" were very general and not necessarily specific to the locations. The biggest let down however was the fact that when they said "Fans can sample flavours from all over the country" they meant fans can pay stupid prices for samples of the flavours from all around the country without being able to try them out for free... You know because insult is never good without injury.

"I felt like an asshole because I was the one who read about it and convinced her to go"

The cat LOVES ice cream. And the look of disappointment on her face was painful. I felt like an asshole because I was the one who read about it and convinced her to go to Ikebukuro to check it out (she hates crowded places).

Thankfully, there was an Okinawan Ice Cream shop in Sunshine City next door so we could have a delicious frozen treat from somewhere much further away than the overpriced mouthfuls on show at the festival.

_1380902
Truthfully, if they told it like it was, I probably would have gone with plan-B and all the cool stuff that we saw AFTER the ice cream disappointment wouldn't have happened. so in the end I suppose I am happy that I went...

But I am still pissed off that I was effectively trolled into going.

That said, If anyone of you were planning to check it out... Don't. it's not worth it.
