About the Museum:
The Hatakeyama Memorial Museum of Fine Art was established as a private art museum to display Japanese, Chinese, and Korean historical art objects, focusing on arts related to the tea ceremony. The collections also include paintings, calligraphy, pottery, lacquerware, and Noh costumes.

Shibuya #RealJapan

Before i lived here, I wasn't much of a fan of the Fuji/Sushi/Geisha/shrine images of Japan that Japanophiles, tend to spam the internet with. Nowhere on Earth is anything like the postcard, but the inability of visitors here to see past their sakura tinted glasses bugged me, after 8 years in Japan, it positively vexes me.

It may be one of the best places to live. I know I don't want to live anywhere else. But all the 'japanese culture' that the tourists shnarf like cocaine no more real than the twisted right-wing nationalism that Shinzo Abe is trying to force down everyone's throats. It's all a facade. Thick white makeup covering a pockmarked and blemished face.

I do my damndest to show the reality of this place, through well composed and quality Photo/videography. Sadly, if there is one universal truth about the vast herd of snapchatting baboons infesting the globe, it's that the last things anyone wants to see, are reality and quality.

Momentum Factory Orii (JETRO)

This article is about a Toyama Based company called Momentum Factory Orii. It's a 3rd generation family business that specialises in the colouring and restoration of bronze sculptures as well as the creation of some very hi end coloured bronze or copper panels using some nifty traditional science.

The science of art

The company was established in 1950 by Takejiro Orii in Takaoka City in Toyama Prefecture. They specialized in the coloring of brass by using chemical reactions to form an oxidized layer that protects the brass from the elements but can also give it a different hue. While the coloring process is based on scientific principles, the means by which these chemical reactions are created are a traditional technique that has been passed down three generations to the current CEO, Koji Orii.

The Great A’Tuin returns!

Due to the great success of this lesson with my 3rd graders last year, I decided to to it again.

I set out to describe a picture of A’Tuin to my students using phrases like “There is a big sea turtle. There are 4 elephant’s on it’s back.” etc… The students then used their imaginations and artistic skills to bring what they heard to life.

Once again the drawings were rather spectacular! check the slideshow to see all 100.

Tokyo Stickers ~5 hit combo~

Graffiti in the traditional spray-paint tagging sense is definitely a feature of Tokyo’s urban landscape, but in the hipper, more happening parts of the city like Harajuku, Shibuya and Shinjuku, Something you notice on almost every wall, signboard and lamppost are these stickers. Some are advertising but most is just street design. Simple, effective and very nicely done. Has this trend taken hold in any of the cities you guys inhabit?
